Karolis Šarkus is a saxophonist and composer, and one of the most active and progressive young creators on the Lithuanian jazz scene. His music combines the language of contemporary jazz with a clear melodic sensibility, while his saxophone sound is characterized by a warm, rich tone and impeccable technique. Karolis is a laureate of the international competition Premio Internazionale Massimo Urbani, a recipient of the Young Music Performer Prize of the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture, and the winner of the Baltic Young Composers’ Competition for Big Band Works. In 2023, he was invited to represent Lithuania in the Euroradio Jazz Orchestra, and in 2021 he released his debut album Palette of Feelings.
The program will feature Karolis Šarkus’ latest work, XIDEA — an album born from fragments: unfinished sketches, notes, and voice recordings that waited a long time for their moment. The title symbolizes the space between inspiration and clarity — the “X” marks uncertainty and the point of silence before sound, while “idea” represents the first spark of feeling. The album clearly reveals Karolis’ compositional thinking: modern jazz is combined with influences from other genres — from the atmospheric qualities of film music to the energy of rock. Within the compositions, both a clear melodic line and expressive solo passages play an important role.
XIDEA is a personal and open musical narrative in which fragmented ideas transform into cohesive, vivid, and emotionally intense music. In performance, this music unfolds as a dynamic and constantly evolving musical dialogue.
