If we were to look for the musician who gave the tenor saxophone its voice in jazz, one of the very first names would undoubtedly be Coleman Hawkins.
His powerful, full-bodied sound, impeccable sense of rhythm and harmonic imagination made Hawkins one of the most important saxophonists in jazz history. At a time when the tenor saxophone was still finding its place in jazz, Hawkins demonstrated that it could be much more than part of the ensemble — it could become a distinctive and commanding solo voice.
His legendary recording of “Body and Soul” became one of jazz improvisation’s great lessons: the melody becomes merely a starting point for harmonic freedom and spontaneous musical thought.
But Hawkins was never a musician trapped in his own era. Having emerged during the swing years, he remained curious as jazz evolved, played with younger generations of musicians and embraced the new language of bebop.
In our Sax Colossus series, Hawkins’s music becomes a starting point for today’s musicians — not an attempt to recreate historic recordings, but a search for the same things Hawkins pursued throughout his life: a powerful sound, freedom, improvisation and an individual voice.
An evening dedicated to the man who helped make the tenor saxophone one of the defining instruments of jazz.
