Klaipėda – a city of free thought, open people, and a unique spirit – has for several decades been home to a remarkable musical history. Like New Orleans in the United States, Klaipėda is the cradle of classical jazz in Lithuania. As the country’s only seaport, it has always been a harbor of cultural transformation, the first to sense and embrace new artistic and musical trends.

Inspired by global musical currents, a historic jazz ensemble – Klaipėdos diksilendas (Klaipėda’s Dixieland) – was formed here in 1978. The group quickly became one of the most popular and significant classical jazz bands in Lithuania, bringing together experienced, distinctive, and expressive jazz masters from across the country. Known for its deep feel for jazz styles, precise and professional interpretation, and strong sense of showmanship, the band changed names several times over its four-decade history. In 2016, it returned to the big stage as Klaipėda Dixieland Memeland.

The group’s new phase was guided by Klaipėda-born saxophonist Laimonas Urbikas, who took over the legacy of the group’s original founder, Pranciškus Narušis (also the founder of the Department of Popular Music at the Lithuanian State Conservatory’s Klaipėda Faculty). Urbikas was driven by a desire to unite fans of traditional jazz for exceptional concert experiences. At the heart of the band is longtime member, drummer Edmundas Federavičius, who joined in 1985. The revived ensemble now performs concert programs alongside some of Lithuania’s most acclaimed vocalists. This time, the voice will be provided by the charismatic Kristina Jatautaitė, recognized as Klaipėda’s top soloist.
