“One of Europe’s premier piano trios,” “the elite of modern piano trios,” “simply beautiful and beautifully simple” — these are just some of the words the international music press has used to describe Norway’s Kjetil Mulelid Trio.

Since their debut in 2017, the group has established itself as one of the most exciting piano trios to emerge from the Norwegian jazz scene. Their journey has taken them from sold-out performances at the Vancouver and Ottawa Jazz Festivals to renowned jazz clubs including Unterfahrt in Munich, PizzaExpress in London, HCP in Lisbon and B-flat in Tokyo.

At the heart of the trio is the music of pianist and composer Kjetil Mulelid. It carries many of the qualities associated with Scandinavian jazz — space, calm and a strong sense of melody. But beneath that transparent surface lies much more: intricate rhythms, rich harmonies, bursts of energy and the constantly evolving interplay of three improvisers.

Together with bassist Rune Nergaard and drummer Andreas Winther, Mulelid creates music in which every sound seems to have its place, yet nothing feels entirely predictable. Composition flows naturally into improvisation, while three individual voices merge into one living musical organism.

Piano, double bass and drums — the most classic of jazz trio formats, approached with a distinctly contemporary musical imagination.
